Observing Changes In Matter

The 2nd grade ASPIRE classes participated in three mini labs focusing on how the properties of matter change when heat is added or taken away. They used Language of the Discipline to record their observations ( before, during and after) and to make predictions. They experienced:
1.  They used fresh lemon juice to write a secret message on white paper. They observed how the paper and message changed when heat was added.
2.  They observed the properties of a bar of soap then predicted what would occur when heat was added.
3.  They observed milk that had 1 1/2 table spoons of white vinegar and fresh lemon juice added. Then predicted what would happen when heat was added and then when heat was taken away ( milk cooled).

Classifying Using Properties

Today's science lab was to classify objects by their properties. Again we paired with Mrs. Patton's class to complete the lab.

Identifying Physical Characteristics of Matter

We combined the two 2nd grade ASPIRE  classes to complete a science lab about matter.  My scholars paired with a scholar from Mrs. Patton's class. Their task was to identify the physical properties of six different items. They were instructed to:
1. Observe the 6 items using their senses...not taste!
2. Use descriptive words for each property.
3. Describe each item as a solid or liquid.
During this lab, the scholars were thinking and acting like scientists by using the Depth and Complexity icons: Language of the Discipline, Details, Change Over Time and Big Idea.

Engineering at Home

One of my scholars, Natalia, and her father decided t take on the newspaper design challenge. As you can see from the picture, they were successful! It is so wonderful when the scholars are so excited about something that they continue at home.

Constructing with Our Friends

We ended our day by inviting Mrs. Patton's 2nd grade ASPIRE class to join us in constructing together.  We used: Keva Planks, Clix, Gears, Legos, K'Nex, Zoobs and straws & connectors. Some groups tried to build according to instructions, while others preferred designing their own creations.
